Animated Cleveland Dot Plot

The Cleveland dot plot is named after William S. Cleveland (1943–2026), an American statistician and computer scientist at Bell Labs. The chart visualizes a single value across multiple categories making rankings and comparisons clean, direct, and easy to scan.

Also called a dot plot, it’s one of the best alternatives to a bar chart. Where a bar fills space with color from zero to the value, a dot encodes the same information with a single point and far less ink. It’s particularly powerful for ranking categories, spotting outliers, or comparing a single metric across a long list.

Getting the chart structure right is the hard part, this tool does that for you. Download and import into your favorite design tool to add your categories and finishing touches in minutes.
